With FRAXEL® the skin is treated in a series of microscopic laser zones called microthermal zones that treat approximately 25 percent of the skin at a time. It is this "fractional" treatment concept that allows us to treat patients using only numbing cream. The entire area is treated, of course, but the microscopic zones of laser energy leave 75 percent of the area untreated. Four treatments are usually necessary.
It is also this concept that allows the skin to heal much faster than if all the skin in the area in question was treated at once. The treatment penetrates into the dermis, eliminates old pigmented cells, and sets the stage for regrowth of new clear skin that replaces skin imperfections. .
